War was declareed on Sunday 3rd September and on Monday 4th September there was a rush on the shipping companies as Americans, holidaying or living in Britain sought to book a passage home. Here crowds gather outside the U.S Line in Haymarket
On the same day that the mericans started leaving, the German Embassy in Carlton Terrace moved out.
Quite quickly messages of support for the decision to declare War on Germany appeared. This one was photographed in October 1939
