We can say the assassination of Franz Ferdinand started the war or the man who killed him did or Austria-Hungary but talking about who was responsible would be a different matter. From what's been written in history books it seems the first world war was something that's been waiting to happen and Franz Ferdinand's death was just the excuse. So in a way they were all responsible.
