On 25 August a "Sunderland" flying boat, carrying H.R.H. the Duke of Kent to Iceland, crashed on a lonely mountainside in Scotland, and all the occupants, except the rear-gunner, were killed. Born on 20th December, 1902, the Duke married Princess Marina of Greece in 1934, by whom he had three children. The youngest, Prince Michael, was born on 4th July, only a few weeks before his father's tragic death. The funeral took place at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on 29th August.

The Prince George, Duke of Kent (George Edward Alexander Edmund; 20 December 1902 – 25 August 1942) was a member of the British Royal Family, the fourth son of George V and Mary of Teck. He held the title of Duke of Kent from 1934 until his death in 1942.
