Thread: Yorkshire Home Guard

These volunteers in Doncaster, Yorkshire, are taking part in a 'recruit drill' under the instruction of old-timer ex-Sergeant Brooks, while waiting for the call-up. Guns and uniforms were in short supply, so the volunteers drilled with broomsticks. Many became frustrated and annoyed by the delays in the process. One salesman who had volunteered commented: 'Customers think the delay in calling-up is a disgrace ... I expect six months will elapse between my registration and medical exam.'

Not the first time that i have seen pictures of the home guard training with broom sticks, it just goes to show how desperate times were back then, thou it does make you think what the outcome would have been had the Germans invaded Britain in the early stages of the war.
