The story is a familiar one, colonial people.. color fighting for a country that hardly shows them respect and offers them little on their return. Not to forget the experiences of American blacks in Viet Nam who fought and died in numbers far greater than their representation in the states and returned to the same victimization they left behind. They were not surprised by the ridiculous contempt shown by the French for the blacks who fought the Nazis in both France and North Africa.

The film gets to the root of the motivation for humans to fight and die in war. They do what is expected of them in a personal battle against fear, a personal battle to show they have the right to live. No mater what awaits them after the war, they are willing participants in the unreal exercise.
