Watched this at the weekend, as it looked like it had potential. But it was very dissapointing - more of a love story than a film about resistance in Free France. Had some good moments though.

Set in Nazi-occupied France at the height of World War II, Charlotte Gray tells the compelling story of a young Scottish woman working with the French Resistance in the hope of rescuing her lover, a missing RAF pilot.

The biggest problem with "Charlotte Gray" is simply that it doesn't make much of an impression. The characters played by the actors were not upto the mark.

Well if this subject matter interests you... the story of a woman joining the French resistance in the hopes of freeing the man she loves, then try renting the engrossing, exhausting 1999 French film "Lucie Aubrac." It's far better movie than "Charlotte Gray" and it's a true story to boot.

I watched the movie and then read the novel, and found that the book was better. However, you're right. Even the book seemed to place more focus on one woman's ordeals during the war as a spy with a bit of romanced mixed between rather than making a striking impression on the war.
