Thread: What would you have done?

I have often wondered what i would have done if i was around during the invasion of the country that i was born in. I would have hoped that i would have been brave enough to have joined some resistance force and helped the allies in my own way. Though i have also wondered what if i wasn't as brave as i thought i would be and turned grass?

What would you have wanted to have done, or more to the point, knowing your own character today, what do you honestly believed you would have done.

This one is probably the most thought about question, particularly by those of us fortunate enough not to have faced a real armed conflict.

I like to think that I would have done exactly what my father did in the Second World War and my grandfather did in WW1; enlist.

I have heard some historians postulate that the young men in this country no longer feel the patriotism which was prevalent in earlier generations, but that is patently not true; just look at the brave young men and women currently serving in Afghanistan.

Do I think I would be as brave as those who have gone before? Listening to some of the ex-servicemen who have appeared in many TV programmes, the consensus seems to be that you didn’t have time to be scared, you just got on with the job you were trained for and then get scared when it was all over.

Ultimately, it’s just one of those questions to which there’s no answer until you’re faced with the situation for real. Only then will you know.

Agree it is a hard question to answer, but one can only go on their own character as stated by the OP. I know of a few friends who would have made very good spivs as of today, and very good soldiers in their prime, real jack the lads. Me, i guess i would have gone with the flow.
