Rt. Hon. Robert Spear Hudson, P.C M.P Minister of Agriculture was wealthy because of the partiality shown by British housewives for the soap that illustrated his father’s name. After Eton and Magdalen he entered the diplomatic service, and in 1924 first entered Parliament as M.P for Whitehaven and in 1931 became member for Southport. Becoming Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, he was appointed Minister of Pensions in 1935, and two years later became head of the Department of Overseas Trade. About this time he came into prominence as leader of the band of younger Conservatives who wished for a more vigorous rearmament policy during the Chamberlain regime. Then in April 1940 he was made Minister of Shipping, and in the next month received the appointment of Minister of Agriculture in Churchill’s administration.
