General J. C. Smuts, South Africa's Prime Minister and C-in-C, received his appoinment as Field Marshal in the British Army on May 24, 1941, his 71st birthday. South Africans subscribed over £140,000 for a birthday gift in the form of a contribution to the National War Fund for soldiers dependants.
