    What did the Germans think!

Imagine waking up to the sight of the Allies coming into view with the mass of ships heading your way?
I have often thought what went thru the head of a normal German soldier (not the facist types) when the invasion started. We all know that the Germans knew the invasion was iminent, but i know how i would have felt if i was based on one of the beaches and saw what looked like a never ending supply of soldiers coming on to the beach.
So the question is how do you think you would have reacted.

Without thinking about it too much surely any German soldier would have been just plain terrified ?

Thinking about it more I reckon there would have been two types of German soldier - the terrified and the liars. Maybe even a third type - the mad.

It makes no difference whether or not they were fascists imo. I would put any party member who still believed the Nazi hype at that stage of the war firmly into the "Mad" category.

    What would I do ?

    Hmmm...

Well I would have ran like hell, stolen some clothes off a washing line, and started pretending I was Polish or something...

Putting myself in their shoes i really don't know what i would have done but i know 100% that i would have sh!t the pants i would have been wearing when i saw the soldiers coming ashore.. At this point in time (1944) the Germans moral was so low i doubt that they believed in themselves, now had it been in 1939-40 things could have been a little different as at that time the Germans thought themselves as invincible. :tong:

If you've ever watched "The Longest Day" I think that gives a pretty good idea of what the Germans thought on seeing the D-Day Armada approaching ...

Idid see the film, but its a film and it is what i would expect to see from any film studio, it is very difficult to place yourself in this position and to know exactly how you would react.

they were kept drunk. as simple as that. When morale is low --> keep them drunk. Vietnam tells the same story.

My granddad still tells about the liberation. a drunk horde of germans left to be replaced by drunk canadians.
